Research and Results
Research shows that increased word recognition improves fluency, which improves reading comprehension.
Calvert conducted a pilot study of the Verticy Learning Phonics/Spelling program in Spring 2011. The study was conducted with 100 sixth graders at a Baltimore public transformation school.
The students who tested in the bottom 50% of the class were split into two groups: the control group and the test group.
The test group received supplemental tutoring sessions using Verticy's Phonics/Spelling program.
The control group received other standard intervention as needed.
After fewer than 40 Verticy lessons, students in the test group who tested below the 50th percentile demonstrated significant growth in reading comprehension and word recognition. Reading skills increased an average of two grade levels.
The study verifies that Verticy Learning is most effective for the students that the program was designed to reach—students who struggle with reading.
