Since 1973, Jemicy School has educated bright, college-bound students who struggle to reach their full potential in traditional academic programs. Jemicy School's experience educating students with LLDs has lead them to empower hundreds of students to realize their intellectual and social potential. Jemicy's highly trained, experienced faculty is proficient in various multi-sensory learning methods that have been proven in their classrooms year after year. These methods are highly successful in helping students with dyslexia and other LLDs learn how to read, write, and spell, despite their learning differences. Not only do they teach foundational skills in the way that works best for students with LLDs, they also establish a stable educational framework to help these students lead a confident and successful academic life. Jemicy continues to dedicate itself to this belief at their day school and through the efforts of Verticy Learning Academy.

Jemicy School partnered with Calvert School in 2006 to create Verticy Learning, the first comprehensive home school curriculum that addresses the needs of children with LLDs. Since 1906, Calvert School has inspired children to reach their full academic potential by helping parents deliver an expert education in the home environment. Calvert combines time-tested curriculum materials with high-quality, innovative computer-based technology to educate students in a 21st century learning environment. The detailed, step-by-step daily lessons are based on the curriculum taught at its private day school in Baltimore, Maryland.

What Makes Verticy Learning Unique?

Verticy Learning Academy presents a comprehensive educational program that addresses the specific language arts needs of these students while keeping them on academic pace with their peers in all subject areas. We employ instructional methods and technology tools that help students overcome their reading challenges and gain confidence in their ability to learn.

Verticy Learning's approach involves four critical components:

Boy writing1). Address the specific needs of students with LLDs using specialized techniques and technology

Verticy Learning applies the same educational approach used at the prestigious Jemicy School, where the faculty has successfully taught hundreds of elementary and middle-school students with LLDs over the last 35 years. Jemicy's expert team of instructors has developed dynamic and effective teaching techniques incorporating the time-tested Orton-Gillingham method of multi-sensory learning. These techniques have been applied to the renowned Calvert School curriculum creating an intense academic program. Your student receives a comprehensive education as he or she overcomes reading and writing challenges. Valuable computer-based applications are integrated throughout the program to support other aspects of the Verticy program and to help your child become a confident, independent reader.

2.) Speak with a variety of instructional "voices"

Instruction is delivered in the home by a Learning Guide, most often a parent. However, the student benefits from a variety of instructional voices. Some lessons are delivered through rich, multimedia, web-based content such as instructional videos, game-based math supplements, and literature selections which are "read" by an online tool. In addition, Verticy's Education Counselors reinforce the instruction delivered in the home and support the Learning Guide as needed with advice, answers, or assistance. Parents also have the option of engaging the support of a Verticy Advisory Teacher or Verticy Live Tutor. These learning professionals provide feedback, analysis, and encouragement through highly personalized interactions with your student.

3.) Meet students where they are academically

Verticy Learning's Course Configuration process ensures that your student is placed at an appropriate point in the curriculum to maximize academic success. Your student will take an online screening assessment and a thorough placement evaluation to determine his or her baseline language arts skills, core subject competency, and math level. A full-year course is then recommended with lessons in all subject areas.

4.) Support self-pacing among subjects

Students enrolled in Verticy Learning Academy enjoy the benefit of self-pacing. Verticy's one-on-one instructional setting allows the student and Learning Guide to accelerate the learning pace in certain areas and to focus more attention on subjects or lessons requiring additional review or remediation.

Verticy Learning encourages your child to discover new ways of learning the foundations of reading and writing through specialized curriculum, innovative teaching techniques, and computer-based learning tools. This discovery leads to a more empowered student who is able to achieve academic success and recapture the wonder of independent learning.
